Chirnside Shelter Mural
Young people in Chirnside worked with artists from Think Make Grow Ltd
to create a mural to be installed in a nasty old bus shelter that was
converted into a nice shelter for the community and a great place for
young people to meet; with funds from Bright New Futures.
7 young people – Miguel de Sousa, Kieran Burnett, Brandon Pollock, Connor Pollock, Scott Burnett, Sophie Tweedie and Siobhan Murphy gave up their weekend to create the mural on panels that can be put into the shelter when issues around its floor have been sorted.
The young people came to workshops with the artists to develop their ideas for the mural, they wanted the art work to be a celebration of their village of which they are very proud and wanted it to be in remembrance of their friends who were tragically killed in a road traffic accident. They were very excited to be able to put their mark on the village, as the shelter is in the middle of Main Street. Not many villages would support a project, like this, that allows young people to contribute to how their village looks. The shelter is a clear statement that says –we have young people here and we don’t try to hide them; they are a valued part of our community.
The mural has some finishing touches to be added like some metal work and varnish. Think Make Grow ltd and the young people will then hold a launch event.
The young people would like to thank those organisations that funded the art work - the Berwickshire Locality Integration Team – Bright New Futures, Chirnside Youth Club, and Greenvale and Farne Salmon who raised funds from a charity football match to be used for youth work at Chirnside Community Centre. Thanks must also go to Chirnside Community Council and the Community Centre Management Committee for their continued support of the Shelter project.
The Chirnside Community Group is the body working with Scottish Borders Council to look at ways to develop the Community Centre and to implement the Playball! project. See the Chirnside Development Group website.

POLICE MATTERS: An officer attended the meeting to report on incidents since the December meeting; main item was the issue of eggs being throw at two houses in the village. The officer asked if anyone has seen anything or had any information to contact them via the Post Office contact point.
WHITEHALL: Report in the previous minute that the Roads Department had measured the sightline at the West Lodge and found it ok referred to the original application made by the Whitehall Estate and not the current application for 6 chalets. Regret any confusion caused.

GRAYPHARM: The appeal against the decision to award the Pharmacy to Graypharm has been referred to the National Appeals Panel. We will be advised of the outcome in due course.
CROSSHILL: Problems with the shelter at the Crosshill being used as a toilet, also issues about cleaning of the area. Part of the problem is the level of the floor which makes it impossible for the council to wash the floor and get the water swept off it. Councillor Fullarton will take the matter up with SBC.
EAST END: The new stone flower bed at the East End will be planted in the spring by Scottish Borders Council. Discussed the possibility of entering the Floral Gateway Competition; would need volunteers to help look after the tubs in the village by doing a bit of weeding and watering. Anyone who may be interested please contact Roy Garden.
FOOTPATH: Complaints received about the condition of the footpath between the bottom of the village and Ninewells Mains Farm. The path has become over grown, the vegetation needs to be scraped back; this is an annual problems which never gets quite resolved. Councillor Cook agreed to take the matter up with the council. Mr. John Hastings was co-opted onto the committee to help with work on the core path network.
WALL: Concerned about the condition of the wall near Ninewell’s North Lodge. The two large holes have been there for two years. We have been in contact with the agent who looks after Ninewell’s Farm but as yet have been unsuccessful in getting the wall repaired. Due to the holes the wall is becoming unsafe and will deteriorate further if the necessary repairs are not made.
Next meeting will be held on Wednesday 18th February 2009 at 7.40pm in the Community Centre.
